Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2

Children are taught the National Curriculum for English through a range of different sessions. Every day the children have an English lesson where they have opportunities to analyse texts and create their own pieces of extended writing. These lessons may also involve drama activities to help children to really engage with a text and develop their understanding of it.

Children have regular guided reading sessions in which they work in small groups to study a text. In these sessions children have the opportunity to work closely with a teacher on developing their reading skills at their own level.

Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG) is a very important part of our English provision and children have two sessions each week where they focus on discrete spelling, punctuation and grammar skills that they then apply in all areas of the curriculum.  In Foundation Stage 2, Year 1 and where needed in Year 2, the children follow the Ruth Miskin Read, Write Inc Phonics programme.  To find out more information about this programme, please click here

From Year 2 the children follow the Read, Write Inc. Spelling programme.  For more information about the spelling programme click on the link below.

Spelling for Parents, using RWI

We teach a cursive handwriting style and children have regular discrete handwriting sessions to learn to join letters correctly. Teachers model this handwriting style regularly and children are encouraged to use this handwriting style in all their written work.
